32 Ounces of Liquid Caffeine

According to wikipedia.com, 90% of American adults consume caffeine daily. Caffeine is the most widely used legal drug on the market. Pre-teens, teens, and adults all use caffeine for the same purpose. For that extra boost of energy to keep them going.
I admit to being a caffeine addict. I have been since I was in high school. I used to sneak a Mountain Dew in my locker and take drinks on our 3 minute breaks between classes. As a high schooler, did I really need caffeine to get me through my day? Probably not. I blame it on the evil invention of ICQ which kept me up to all hours of the night chatting with people I saw all day long.

In college, caffeine became a different method of survival. It was the cure all for hangovers, all nighters, finals week, and 8am classes. My cubed dorm fridge was always stocked with some sort of caffeinated beverage. Mountain Dew continued to be my caffeine of choice, as you got the most bang for your buck. As I think back to my college days, I think of caffeine as my confidant, my sidekick, my partner in crime. It jolted me back to awareness after the death of a never forgotten friend, the death of an admirable grandfather, the heartbreak of college boys, and without it I would have never been able to put in all those hours at the library and graduated with a 3.5 GPA.

As an adult, caffeine has continued to be a means of survival. I only survived my first year of teaching because I had the effects of caffeine working for me. The energy and enthusiasm you need to teach children with special needs can only be acheived through drugs and I chose legalized drugs. Through the years I have had to limit my intake of caffeine through my pregnancies and post partum periods. However today, as I left the house at 8:45 am to run some errands with Baby Bryce in tow, I stopped and induldged myself in 32 ounces of liquid caffeine. 32 ounces of pure glory. With each suck of the straw I noticed the beauty of the season, the fresh morning air, and smiled with thankfulness of the fullness of my life.

With a toddler and a newborn and a husband that works most nights and weekends, caffeine is my affair. The only guilt that nags me in my addiction is when poor Bryce is wide awake at 3:00am because mommy failed to wait 2 hours after her indulgment to feed him.
BUT...a mommy's gotta do what a mommy's gotta do! A happy momma=a happy baby!
